6 Pet Trends You Need to Know About for 2018

$

We might not be able to tell you whether it’s going to be a heatwave this summer (pretty please), or if you’ll get that promotion you’re gunning for (fingers crossed!), but consider this your crystal ball into the year ahead with your pet. From matching designer threads for pet and owner, to ‘clean eating’ diets and anti-establishment gear for rebel hounds, you can count on these 5 pet trends making a big splash in 2018!

coucou wear matching fashion dogs and owners

  1. MATCHING

Your dog is your BFF, and what do BFF’s do? Match! This trend has been creeping up for a while now, with plenty of pooch parents going mad over matching PJ’s like this ones from Fabdog. But this year will see ‘twinning’ burst into the mainstream, taking the trend beyond novelty items, and into designer fashion collections – snap!

Our top pick for hip outerwear is new Turkish brand Coucou Wear. Launched by designer Palmet Bal, who has a degree in fine art and textile design, the range includes printed sweaters, hooded raincoats and super cool tee-shirts, all perfect for the modern fur family, and without a ‘fur mom’ slogan in sight.

2. SUPER LUXE

Since we launched StyleTails in 2012, we’ve been on a mission to show you how you can create a beautiful life with your pet, including designer fashion and homewares aplenty. But things are about to step up a notch in 2018, with designer goods for pets propelled into the the ‘super luxe’ category. Sure it’s totally conspicuous consumption but for some it’s simply a matter of taste.

Our top pick for fashion-forward hounds is Wolfpack NYC – inspired by 1950s New York fashion, the brand’s signature winter coats are made from European aniline leathers and bespoke Italian hardware, with exaggerated faux-fur trims and velour linings to protect against the weather. Starting from a mere USD$275, what more could a chic city hound wish for?

HOME MADE CAT FOOD

3. CLEAN EATING

Ever since Elle McPherson’s trainer James Duigan started the whole ‘clean and lean’ craze, the ‘clean eating’ phenomenon has shown no signs of slowing down. In 2018 this trend will extend to the entire household, including our pets.

As pet lovers, we want our furkids to live a long and healthy life, full of energy and vitality, and diet plays a huge role in this. The media has done a lot to expose the reality of what goes into commercial pet foods over the past few years, including lots of cheap ‘fillers’ like grain and ash, which bulk food out but offer no nutritional value to the animal, In fact, these can actually cause reactions like itchy skin, diarrhoea and vomiting.

In response, there has been an explosion in natural, grain free, organic and raw pet foods, and what started as a niche market has now gone mainstream with a number of supermarkets even overhauling their pet food ranges to cater to more educated pet parents, making it easier than ever to feed your pet high quality, biologically appropriate food – WIN! We’re also counting on more of you choosing to make your own pet food this year – and we’ve got some great recipes to get you started.

pethaus denim battle jackets for dogs
4. ANTI-ESTABLISHMENT

Call it punk, rebel spirit, or just a big middle finger up to the big (orange) man, 2018 is all about tearing up the rule book and moving to your own beat. If your pets are anything like ours, they probably already operate by their own rules, so why not give them the right gear to do it in? Topping our list of offbeat pet brands is Australian maker of the coolest damn battle jackets for pets – Pethaus. And if you haven’t already seen seen these cult dog tags by Growlees, as worn of sassy insta-kween Dolly Pawton, then you’ve missed the memo. With slogans like ‘CUTE BUT PSYCHO. BUT CUTE’, and ‘I’M NO BASIC BITCH’, they are feisty AF.

5. BRING THE OUTSIDE IN

As we understand more about the natural behaviours of our modern feline friends, so too we become more aware of the need to provide the right kind of indoor environment for our cats. Cats are increasingly the popular choice for urbanites, meaning more felines are living a life exclusively indoors. We predict 2018 is the year more of you with indoor cats will bring the ‘outside in’. Whether it’s creating a lush indoor cat garden, ‘catifying’ your house with a cat friendly makeover including ramps, wall-mounted perches, hammocks and built-in scratchers, or trying out some great indoor games for cats which mimic the hunting instincts they would use outside.

stapleford park dog friendly hotel

Your hound can holiday in style at Stapleford Park Hotel

6. THE LUXE DOG HOLIDAY

Taking your dog on holiday is not a new phenomenon, but 2018 will see dog friendly travel evolve to a new standard. According to new research by American Express, Britons will will spend £227 million taking their dogs on holiday this year, with over a quarter (27%) surveyed planning to take their pupster on vacation.

While there are plenty of hotels that claim to be ‘dog friendly’, many of these could better be described at ‘dog tolerant’. We predict this year will see more hotels upping their dog friendly cred, and offering full VIP (very important pet) packages, to make your faithful friend fully welcome.

Our pick of the litter is the new Doggy Divine package from Stapleford Park Hotel, a lavish Georgian country house hotel in Leicestershire. Setting a new standard in luxury dog friendly travel, Stapleford Park has commissioned bespoke luxury dog beds from local designers, Doggy & Gabbona of Melton Mowbray, each uniquely designed to complement the style and character of four select and luxuriously furnished suites at the 55-room country house hotel.  Each bed is individually handcrafted and contains hypo-allergenic materials to aide in peaceful sleep.

New doggy menus have also been devised providing a selection of gourmet recipes including a main meat dish, Pawpato treats and character creams. To ensure maximum comfort and indulgence, Stapleford Park has also introduced a new Doggy Afternoon tea menu, offering a delicious selection of doggy biscuits and Pawsecco (herbal drink for dogs from local business Hungry Hounds Bakery), to sit alongside its traditional and very popular afternoon tea for human guests.

To help you sort the good from the bad, we’ve launched our Luxe Pet Guide – the discerning pet lover’s little black book. Find the very best hotels, B&B’s and inns that genuinely LOVE DOGS!

valentine's day dog

With Valentine’s Day almost upon us, never has there been a better time to shower your better half with love. And while traditionally the most romantic day of the year is for loved-up couples who want to splash some cash, this year, we’ll be using it as an excuse to treat our feline friends and canine companions to some serious TLC.

From a romantic dinner for two at your favourite dog friendly restaurant or pub, to some serious pet pampering for your four legged friend, we’ve curated a comprehensive guide for ways in which you can make this Valentine’s Day one to remember, for both you and your furry companion.

The Horn of Plenty Hotel a beautiful Dog Friendly Hotel in Devon

1. ESCAPE FOR A DOG FRIENDLY HOLIDAY!

Why not treat your four legged friend to a last minute getaway to a sumptuous pet friendly hotel? From French chateaus to English manor homes, there’s ample opportunities for a weekend away that is pet friendly to boot. One of our favourite’s is The Horn of Plenty Hotel in Devon, where your canine companion will even be treated to their very own dog’s dinner on the first night of your stay. With unbeatable views, elegant rooms and endless walks for you and your pet pooch, this is a surefire way to impress this Valentine’s Day.

2. TREAT YOUR PUP TO A DOG FRIENDLY DINNER

They say that the way to man’s heart is via their stomach, and the same can be said when it comes to pets. So if you want to show your feline friend or canine companion how much you love them with a romantic dinner for two. We love London House by Gordon Ramsay; ideally located for a scenic dog walk in nearby Battersea Park you can then treat your four-legged friend to a treat and a drink in the bar before tucking in to one of their famous steaks.

UK's best dog grooming spas

3. PAMPER YOUR PET

If your fluffy friend deserves some tender loving care, then book them into one of the UK’s most exclusive pet pampering spas. From blueberry and vanilla facials to oatmeal baths and more, try The Pet Spa in London for the crème de la crème of indulging treatments. Or if you’re based in the north of England, Whitby’s The Dog Spa at Raithwaite Estate offers everything from aromatherapy massages to pet-friendly blow drys.

4. HOME MADE VALENTINE’S DAY TREATS

Dab hand in the kitchen? Why not rustle up some tasty Valentine’s Day treats for your treasured furry friend? We love these cranberry hearts – perfect for any canine companion with a sweet tooth, these red velvet pupcakes are the ultimate romantic gesture, or these Berry Oat Valentine’s treats are sure to please your pooch. 5. HAVE A PLAY DATE

Whether you’re the proud pet parent of a canine companion or a feline friend, clear some time in your diary for an afternoon play date where you can focus your attention entirely on them. Contrary to popular belief, cats love playing fetch as much as dogs; and feather and string – a game where you attach a piece of string or a feather to a wand-like instrument, is another way to your cat’s heart. For playful pups, try tug of war or Frisbee if the weather permits, or alternatively opt for one of these indoor games.

puppy massage

6. GIVE A PUPPY MASSAGE

Learning to massage your pup can help form a special bond between the two of you, and treating your pooch to an at-home massage is a special way to celebrate Valentine’s Day and nurture your four legged friend. There are ample benefits for your dog – from reduced anxiety to deeper breathing and a healthier coat – and you can find step by step instructions here.

How to Prepare Your Cat for the new Spring Season

prepare cat for spring

Spring has officially sprung. In just a few weeks the weather will be warmer (we live in hope), which is fantastic for felines who love to get out and about and explore their local surroundings. However, with the arrival of the new season, comes a few changes which will need a little attention. Thankfully, getting your kitty ready is a breeze! Check out our top tips on how to prepare your cat for spring.

SAY HELLO TO SHEDDING

Many cat owners judge the arrival of spring due to the sheer volume of cat hair that covers their homes. As your cat swaps their winter coat for spring fur, you may notice an increase in the amount of fur being shed. If you are a new cat owner, this can be a little worrisome but seek reassurance in the fact that it’s completely normal. While there’s nothing you can do to stop it, there are some easy ways to deal with it.

The key here is grooming. Start by brushing slowly in short sessions, using treats if your cat protests. This will help reaffirm brushing as a positive experience. As your cat becomes used to these grooming sessions, increase their length and frequency. This will ensure you fully remove dead skin and fur, meaning less fur lost around your home and a healthy coat for your happy cat. Not sure what you need to get started? Check out 5 of the best cat grooming tools to get your feline spring-ready.

prepare cat for spring

BE MINDFUL OF WHAT YOU PLANT

With the warmer weather, no doubt your cat will be keen to explore the great outdoors. Start by making your garden a safe zone. Be mindful of what pesticides and chemicals you use, such as slug and snail pellets, which can be toxic to cats. When it comes to blooms, lilies, daffodils and azaleas as poisonous so are best avoided.

prepare cat for spring

CATS HAVE ALLERGIES TOO

Not something that’s typically associated with cats, but is commonplace nonetheless, felines suffer from allergies too, which are rife with the arrival of spring. Plants, pollens and grass can lead to irritation, with symptoms arising, similar to those of humans. These usually take the form of itchy skin and ear problems, hair loss or inflammation. Respiratory symptoms and runny eyes are indicators of a reaction too.

GRASS WOES

Cats will often eat grass as a way of ridding their bodies of those nasty fur balls but with long grass comes the risk of the blades getting stuck in their nose and throat. This can cause difficulty breathing as well as coughing, sneezing, loss of appetite and discharge from the nose. To help avoid this, ensure you tackle that first grass cut of the new season as soon as possible, and continue to keep its length as short as possible.

prepare cat for spring

AVOID A STING IN THE TAIL

Cats are notorious for chasing anything that moves and that definitely includes bees and wasps, which are plentiful in spring. Thankfully, a sting usually isn’t severe. With a bee sting, tackle it by checking the area, removing the sting if it’s still present and gently clean the area with bicarbonate of soda (one teaspoon to 300ml with warm water). For a wasp sting, bathe the area in lemon juice or malt vinegar. If the sting is near the mouth or neck, you may need to seek the expertise of a vet. And just like humans, cats can be allergic too so watch for swelling or difficulty breathing.

TACKLE FLEAS AND TICKS

With warmer weather comes an abundance of insects, most notably fleas and ticks which are a cat’s worst nightmare. The first step is to ensure your cat is protected against them. There are an abundance of products available so ask your trusted vet for their recommendation. Staying up-to-date with treatments is the best way to keep fleas and ticks at bay.

Watch out for symptoms such as scratching, dark specs in their fur, hair loss around their back or tail area or bites on your own skin. Check regularly for fleas by combing the fur with a fine tooth comb over a white sheet. A high presence of black spots may indicate flea droppings.

Spring is an amazing time for cats and with a little preparation, it is definitely safe. If you notice any unusual behaviour, do not hesitate to get in touch with your vet as soon as possible.

Had the distinct honor of shooting for @girlsandtheircats 😻 #adoptdontshop ___ “Atticus (see also: Fatticus; Fatty-Cakes) walked – literally – into my life spring of 2013. On the invitation of a can of tuna served on the front stoop, the bold little thing, just under a year I’d have guessed by weight and length, waltzed into my apartment, at the time shared with three other girls (all confessed “dog people”) and, as can obviously be assumed, never left. It wasn’t unusual to see strays on the streets of North Philly. Among many other things (few cheerful, positive, or cuddly) North Philly was known for its abundance of stray cats. Atticus was one of their lot wholeheartedly; took no shit, feared no dogs, ate straight up anything. He was the sort of cat that people who said they hated cats came to love. You could wrestle with him like a pup, cuddle with him like an old, raggedy stuffed animal, and share a midnight munchie – his favorite being 35 cent Oodles n’ Noodles. Food, it would turn out, was something Atticus really, really enjoyed. Perhaps it was those formative months spent scrounging the unforgiving and un-bountiful city streets that instilled in him the dire desire to dine. Or maybe he’s on, still, a lifelong culinary quest to satisfy those original cravings that only back alley bodega dumpster diving can sate. In any case, he quickly became a sizable companion whom I lugged – lifting from the legs not the back – from city to city. Together, we moved back home to Pittsburgh and converted my deathly allergic childhood best friend into a roomie and, after not too long, willing cat-cuddle-buddy. He was an outdoor cat and it wasn’t long before our backyard filled with the small femurs, skulls and shoulder girdles of unidentifiable rodents. Atticus grew a rap on the street. Neighbors greeted him by name, invited him in for dinner, walked with him to the bus stop in the morning. One woman mentioned casually that she came home one night to find him already inside of her apartment, waiting to warmly greet her.” Read the full story at @girlsandtheircats 😽

How to Introduce Dogs and Cats

$
0
0

With almost one in two UK households owning a pet, we are a proud nation of animal lovers. Yet, while over a quarter of us own a dog and a fifth of us own a cat, only 7% of the population currently keep both in the same household. This is not because we don’t love cats and dogs equally, but because so many of us feel they cannot cohabit. After all, the phrase “fighting like cats and dogs” has been around at least since the 16th century!

But is this long-running feud between dogs and cats really based on fact, or can our canine and feline friends live harmoniously together? James Wellbeloved have reported that with a little bit of understanding and training, cats and dogs are as likely to get on with one another as they are with their own species, it just takes some consideration of what each animal likes and dislikes. With this in mind, here is your go-to guide for introducing dogs and cats.

GETTING THE SCENT

Cats and dogs explore the world with their nose. Familiar smells tell them they are somewhere they can feel safe, while unfamiliar animal scents can be a sign of a stranger in their territory. Before placing your cat and dog in the same room, rub towels against each of them and then allow each pet to explore the other’s scent in a separate space. Whether they are curious or indifferent, it will mean they will instantly feel a little more familiar with the other when they eventually meet.

THE CRITICAL PEDICURE

It’s natural to worry more about your dog’s reaction than that of your cat. After all, depending on your dog’s breed, one mistimed snap of the jaws could be fatal to your cat. However, it is also worth taking your cat to the vet for a quick pre-dog-meeting pedicure. Dogs have long memories and cat claws can be sharp; a swipe across the nose could be enough to permanently prevent a beautiful friendship.

PATIENT MEETINGS

Choose a space that allows both a good deal of space. Your dog and cat should feel they can retreat if they need and you should keep your dog on a lead so you can prevent any sudden lunges. Once they have had a little sniff and feel comfortable, show each pet love, equally and separately. Let each pet see you play with and stroke the other; they will learn that this other animal is trustworthy and a family friend.

SEPARATE DINING

While there are always exceptions, cats are usually quite picky about what they eat and prefer their own food. Meanwhile, most dogs will eat whatever they can reach. So, it is crucial you keep your cat’s dinner bowl out of reach from your dog. If your cat suspects another animal has had its tongue on his or her bowl, it can be enough to put them off their food for good. Also, dogs and cats should be fed food suitable to their species, breed and age to meet their nutrient requirements; eating cat food could cause your dog to become sick or overweight.

A SAFE SPACE

Cats like consistency and cleanliness when eating, sleeping and going to the toilet. Once your cat has determined his or her habits, the dog getting in and disturbing this space can be devastating.

Thus, it is essential to set limits to where your dog can go in the home, keeping at least one room that only the cat can access. Even your dog sniffing outside the door can be distracting for your cat, so consider setting up boundaries for your dog which your cat can easily navigate. Another great way to create safe zones for your cat is by providing vertical space for your cat to climb. A good cat tree or some climbing furniture will allow your cat to perch high above ground level, well away from dogs.

Above all, introducing your cat and dog requires patience. Like any household with multiple pets, it can take time for them to learn to tolerate one another, but with gentle introductions and firm boundaries, they will soon learn that their new companion is a friend.

BriAnne, tell us the story behind Girls and their Cats?

I decided to start this project as a way to highlight interesting cat ladies and to dismantle the crazy cat lady stereotype.

Did you ever imagine it would become the success it is today?

No, definitely not. I thought it would be a series of maybe 20 cat ladies that I would share on social media and then move on to something else. The attention it’s received has encouraged me to keep it going.

What are your own cats like?

I have two cats, Liza and Tuck. Liza is a beautiful brown tabby. She’s passionate about food, despite having only one tooth left. She loves a rough rub down and is quite the chatterbox. Tuck is a black and white tuxedo cat. He plays fetch, loves belly rubs, and is very mischievous. If I scold him for doing something he shouldn’t be doing, he’ll talk back as if he’s a moody teenager rebelling against authority.

Tell us about the women you photograph. How do they break the ‘crazy cat lady’ stereotype?

They are all cool, stylish, interesting, career-driven women and not the crazy, cat-hoarding spinsters that the media portrays.

Who meets the mark for being photographed?

I’m looking for inspiring women, who have rescued/adopted their cat(s) and who have a unique story to share.

What’s the best thing you’ve gained from the project?

I didn’t know anyone when I moved to NYC. Through this project, I’ve met so many amazing women; some have turned into professional connections and some have turned into pretty great friends.

What photography tips would you offer our readers for capturing Instagram-worthy photos of their cats?

Cats are difficult models. They don’t take direction well and when they’re done, they’re done. I make sure there are cat treats at each shoot to help keep the cat motivated and interested. When I want them to look at the camera, I shake a noisy cat toy right above the lens. It works (almost) every time.
