Should You Stay Together for Your Pet?

0
0

How much do you love your pet? Enough to ensure they get a walk every day, despite the often dismal weather? Enough to put ensure they eat nothing but the finest dog food while you make do with food that’s on special offer? How about enough to put their happiness before your own? Do you love your furry friend enough to go to the greatest length of all – and stay with a partner purely for the wellbeing of your pet?

While it may seem like an extreme scenario for many, as a nation of pet lovers, a whopping 15% of pet owners admit to having only stayed with a partner to keep their shared pet happy, while 14% of pets are prescribed medication following a couples’ break up. This comes from a new study from pet insurers MORE TH>N, who discovered that more than one in 10 pet owners in Britain have contemplated breaking up with a spouse, only to reconcile the relationship to avoid any negative impact on their pet and keep their four legged friend content.

As with all break-ups, there are many factors to take into account when deciding the logistics of the split, and shared ownership or ‘custody’ of a pet only adds to such considerations. Topping the list of people’s apprehensions that led them to reluctantly staying with a partner who they shared a pet with was that of being unable to decide who should take custody of the animal (36%), followed closely by not wanting to take the pet to a rescue centre (25%). Concerns around the potential emotional repercussions for the pet were also revealed, with 14% saying it came down to feeling guilty about how the animal would feel post break-up, resulting in them staying with their partner just to preserve their pet’s emotional welfare.

Unlike children, under English laws, pets are considered property of the owners – much like a car or a handbag – and therefore their welfare isn’t considered like that of an offspring, despite the fact that many are viewed as an integral parts of the family.

And while staying together for the sake of you pet may seem like a worthy notion; the reality can in fact be worse, when taking into account the fact that you may be forcing your pet to live in a hostile environment.

John Ellenger, head of pet insurance at MORE TH>N said: “It is true that our beloved pets have never played a more important role in our day-to-day lives. As our study reveals, a number of pet owners will remain in a relationship with a partner in order to prevent their shared pet from experiencing any negative effects from a breakup. It is testament to the lengths we’ll go to protect our pets’ emotional wellbeing – even if it means making sacrifices of our own. That said, if couples do decide to split and they share an animal, it remains important to keep the pet’s best interests at heart when arranging its future living arrangements, as a means of minimising the stress of lifestyle changes as much as possible.”

Top Tips for managing a separation with pets:

  • Avoid arguments: much like when parents are going through a divorce and children are involved, it’s important to retain a sense of peace and avoid a tug-of-war with your partner which may effect your pet.
  • Stick to the facts: try and steer clear of getting too emotional when discussing the logistics of who keeps your four legged friend. Did the pet belong to one of you prior to the relationship? Or was one person responsible for bringing the pet into the relationship? Answering these questions honestly may help when it comes to deciding who should keep the pet post-break up.
  • Most important of all is to consider which of you can best look after your pet as a solo parent. Do you work 9-5 or do you work from home? Who can provide more space and a regular routine for your pup? Such factors are hugely important when it comes to agreeing on who your pet should live with post break-up.
  • Finally, make an agreement and stick to it. Once you’ve decided who should have the pet on a more permanent basis and what (if any) visiting rights the other partner should have, ensure that both parties agree to maintain the set rules for the wellbeing of your pet.

7 Common Cat Myths Debunked

common cat myths debunked

Cats have been the source of much speculation and mystery over the years, with plenty of weird and wonderful superstitions surrounding these curious creatures. There are also a few commonly held beliefs about cats which are simply not true. Here, we debunk seven commons myths about cats.

  1. CATS ALWAYS LAND ON THEIR FEET

As a cat owner, you will definitely have heard this one before. While cats are very agile creatures that can leap, twist and turn with seemingly ninja-like stealth, they can still seriously injure themselves if they fall. Cats do have a ‘righting reflex’ which enables them to flip and turn quickly, helping them to land on their feet, however it won’t protect your feline friend from a hard impact if they fall from a great height. Falling very short distances can also be tricky where they don’t have time to turn and land on all four paws. Injuries from major falls and can be serious and very costly to fix, so The Blue Cross recommends keeping windows closed if you live in a high-rise or multi-story home, and ensure you fix any wire mesh to prevent cats from jumping through.

2. BLACK CATS ARE BAD LUCK

Black cats have had a bap rep stemming back to the Middle Ages when they were thought to have demonic powers, connected to witches. The fear of black cats even reached settlers in America with people to this day thinking black cats are bad luck, which may explain why many black cats are the last to leave rescue centres. Of course none of these old cat superstitions have any truth to them and black cats are no more lucky or unlucky than any other coloured cat. In fact, black cat hair is probably harder to see on your sofa, so why not consider one for your next pet!

3. CATS DON’T LIKE TO ROAM OUTSIDE THIER TERRITORY

While it’s true that cats are territorial animals and will generally establish a ‘home base’ range where they sleep, eat and stalk on a fairly regular schedule, some cats love nothing more than a good adventure. From hikes atop rugged Canadian mountains to canoe trips through British Columbia, and even the odd helicopter ride, we recently rounded up 8 of the world’s most adventurous cats who call the world their territory and are loving every minute!

4. YOU CAN’T WALK A CAT ON A LEAD

Dogs may be the kings of ‘walkies’ but most cats can also learn to walk on a lead. For owners who don’t have any outside space but want to give their cats a sense of the great outdoors, training them to walk on a leash can be a really fun and rewarding experience. Don’t be daunted by the task – our cat expert Anita Kelsey shares her 5 steps to train your cat to walk on a lead

5. ALL CATS HATE WATER

If your cat hates bath time, you might have the scars to prove, but not all cats hate water. In fact, some cats don’t mind a good splash around, including these 8 cat breeds that actually like water. Most cats are naturally curious about water, and moving water in particular, which is why you may have seen your cute companion drinking from the kitchen tap or with their head in the toilet bowl!

6. CATS ARE COLD AND INDEPENDENT

Cats have long been considered frosty and aloof compared to their ‘loving and loyal’ canine counterparts,  but do they really live up to this label? According to cat expert Anita Kelsey, much of this perception is to do with our own expectations as pet owners. Just like dogs, some cats are also more inclined to enjoy a cuddle than others. If it’s a snuggle partner you’re after, check out this round up of 6 of the most affectionate cat breeds

7. COW’S MILK IS A GREAT TREAT FOR CATS

A saucer of cow’s milk has long been thought of as a lovely treat for you cat, but is it really good for them? Not according to Dr Cailin Heinze, an assistant professor of nutrition at the Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, who told Vet Street: “Most adult mammals have at least some degree of lactose intolerance — and cats are no exception. Lactose is a sugar, and undigested sugars draw water into the intestine, causing diarrhoea. They are also fermented in the gut, and can cause bloating and flatulence.” If you want to give your cat something tasty, stick to good quality meat-based treats and stay away from the white stuff.

Delicious and Safe Christmas Dinner Ideas for Dogs and Cats

christmas dinner ideas for pets

If there was ever a time for over-indulging on the food front, it’s surely got to be Christmas. From a succulent roast dinner with all the trimmings to fruit-laden puddings, cakes and chocolates – not to mention nuts, mince pies and smoked salmon – there’s plenty to feast on.

With all this eating, drinking and merriment, it’s hard to resist slipping your faithful friend some scraps, or even preparing them their own Christmas dinner from our leftovers, however, we need to be mindful that not everything on the Christmas menu should be shared.

To help you create a healthy, safe and pet friendly menu for your pussy or pooch this festive season, MORE TH>N’s qualified vet Andrew Moore, has devised the ultimate Christmas dinner guides for cats and dogs, ensuring all the family can join in on the fun and the food this year.

christmas dinner menu for dogs

Andrew Moore explains: ‘We all over- indulge at Christmas, but festive food in human sized quantities is more no no no than ho ho ho for our pets. Most festive food is fatty, rich and can sometimes even be downright poisonous to cats and dogs. However it’s not all Bah Humbug, there are certain foods that are fine to feed your pet for one festive meal. When it comes to our pets and food, it’s all about moderation – so the one occasion you should act like Scrooge is to keep the festive treats small and then your pet can enjoy their very own Christmas meal this year, without any nasty repurr-cusions.’

CHRISTMAS DINNER MENU FOR DOGS

Starter:

FISH: Whilst salmon is a favourite amongst us humans, it’s also a great starter for your dog as it is high in protein and Omega 3 fatty acids, which help support a dog’s immune system and also add shine to a dog’s coat. Choose plain salmon in spring water over smoked salmon though.  Prawns – as long as they are well cooked and shelled – will also go down very well.

Main:

MEAT: Treat your pooch to some turkey this Christmas. Choose small amounts of boneless and skinless breast meat, which can be added to your dog’s meal in moderation.

VEGETABLES: To bring a bit of variety to their Christmas bowl, add some sprouts, swede mash, potatoes, green beans and parsnip, ideally served plain – before any butter or oil is added.

Dessert:

Pudding is just as important as the main in our opinion and there’s no need to leave your dog out once the dinner is over. Low in lactose desserts like yogurt and ricotta cheese in moderation are a great option, as they are excellent sources of calcium and protein. You could also swap grapes and raisin-based desserts for blueberries and dried cranberries, which are both safe for dogs.

TOP TIP: Don’t forget to remove a little bit of their normal food to even things out!

CHRISTMAS DINNER MENU FOR CATS

Starter:

FISH: Cats too can tuck in to a fishy starter with small amounts of canned tuna, which is a great source of protein in moderation

Main:

MEAT: Small amounts of lean meats like skinless turkey breast can add some variety to their moggy menu

VEGETABLES: Sprouts, swede, carrot and parsnip mash add some colour to their festive feast, but just make sure they don’t contain butter, seasoning or anything toxic such as onions or garlic.

Dessert:

Sugar, spice and everything nice hold no interest for a cat, so don’t feel guilty when tucking in to your fourth dessert of the day – cats would much prefer to be eating savoury foods

TOP TIP: Don’t forget to remove a little bit of their normal food to even things out!

We can’t forget that there’s a number of festive no-no’s that need to be avoided on dogs and cats festive menus this Christmas – the main foods being grapes, raisins, nuts, onions and chocolate.

5 Great Ways to Grow the Bond Between You and Your Cat

*This post is sponsored by our carefully chosen partner – Sheba.

It’s easy to win the affections of a dog, with their goofy faces and slobbery tongues; they are practically begging to love you. But cats are different creatures altogether. Aloof, independent and grumpy are just some of the ways our feline friends have been described, and while not all mogs live up to these moody monikers, plenty of pussy parents are going to extreme lengths to please their furry friends.

Remember that time you were bone-tired but you let your cat sleep on your head because they looked so comfortable? Or when you were meant to be working but you took a really long break because Mrs. Fluffy Pants was warming her toosh on your laptop? Or how about that time you froze to death because your cat was sleeping on your winter coat and you didn’t want to disturb him?

If you’re guilty of some (or all!) of these kitty-coddling crimes, then this post is for you. Here’s 5 great ways to spend more quality with your number one feline, that don’t involve kicking your partner out of bed to make way for your cat.

  1. ENJOY SOME PLAY

Cats are naturally playful and inquisitive creatures, so sure-fire way to please your puss is to spend some time playing together. If you cat lives exclusively indoors, this play time will not only be gratefully received by your curious kitty, but is also essential for their physical and mental wellbeing. According Cat Behaviourist Anita Kelsey, “playtime is imperative to relieve boredom and frustration; it can also improve the human to cat bond”.

The key to setting up successful and enjoyable playtime for both you and your cat is finding the right game or toy to suit your cat’s personality. Cats are natural hunters so anything they can chase, tease and pounce on should capture their interest. Wands, lures and teaser toys are an excellent option for interactive play with your puss. If you’re looking for inspiration, check out these 5 fun indoor games to play with your cat.

  1. SHARE A TREAT

If your pussy has a rather refined palate, then a well-chosen treat could be the way to her heart. Don’t be tempted to indulge your cat with human food, as much of this is not naturally healthy for cats, and instead opt for a premium treat that will be sure to get the purr of approval. If you cat is the type to take a treat and saunter off into the distance, SHEBA’s new Creamy Snacks might be the perfect way to keep them closer for longer. A silky smooth puree in three lip-smacking flavours including salmon, beef and Chicken, they come in specially designed packaging, which allows your cat to enjoy the snack while you hold the sachet, for a special and very yummy experience.

  1. GET GR(OOH)MED

Unlike dogs, whose happiness is measured by the depth of the mud they have rolled in, cats are fastidious cleaners who love nothing more than remaining perfectly preened. And while grooming is a pretty personal affair for most cats, it can also be a lovely way to bond with your feline if they enjoy you joining in with this ritual. Some cats love nothing more than a soft brush being run through their fur while they purr contentedly on your lap. Sure you’ll be covered in cat hair, but your kitty will love you for it!

  1. READ THE SIGNS

While cats have been domesticated for over 10,000 years, we still don’t understand everything about their behaviour, and nor have they fully figured us humans out either. In order to cultivate a happy and healthy relationship with your cat, you will need to learn to speak their language. A cat’s body language can give you a deep insight into their emotional state and let you know what they like or don’t like. Flattened down ears and puffed up fur usually mean your cat feels threatened and needs to be left alone, but if they are stretched out on their side with their ears upright, they are most likely relaxed and content. If you learn to read your cat’s visual cues and follow their lead, your one-on-one time will be so much more rewarding.

  1. QUALITY CUDDLES

Not all cats are affectionate but if your kitty loves a cuddle then it’s important to make time for that lovely physical contact. Get to know your cat’s individual personality and make your cuddle time on their terms. Never push or force your cat to stay on your lap, but when you see they are in an affectionate mood, take advantage of the moment and give them some strokes where they like it best. Most cats enjoy being stroked around their scent glands including their chin and cheeks, as well as at the base of the tail. It’s important to know where not to stroke as well – like the tummy, which is usually a no-go zone for a lot of cats!

6 Pet Trends You Need to Know About for 2018

0
0

We might not be able to tell you whether it’s going to be a heatwave this summer (pretty please), or if you’ll get that promotion you’re gunning for (fingers crossed!), but consider this your crystal ball into the year ahead with your pet. From matching designer threads for pet and owner, to ‘clean eating’ diets and anti-establishment gear for rebel hounds, you can count on these 5 pet trends making a big splash in 2018!

  1. MATCHING

Your dog is your BFF, and what do BFF’s do? Match! This trend has been creeping up for a while now, with plenty of pooch parents going mad over matching PJ’s like this ones from Fabdog. But this year will see ‘twinning’ burst into the mainstream, taking the trend beyond novelty items, and into designer fashion collections – snap!

Our top pick for hip outerwear is new Turkish brand Coucou Wear. Launched by designer Palmet Bal, who has a degree in fine art and textile design, the range includes printed sweaters, hooded raincoats and super cool tee-shirts, all perfect for the modern fur family, and without a ‘fur mom’ slogan in sight.

2. SUPER LUXE

Since we launched StyleTails in 2012, we’ve been on a mission to show you how you can create a beautiful life with your pet, including designer fashion and homewares aplenty. But things are about to step up a notch in 2018, with designer goods for pets propelled into the the ‘super luxe’ category. Sure it’s totally conspicuous consumption but for some it’s simply a matter of taste.

Our top pick for fashion-forward hounds is Wolfpack NYC – inspired by 1950s New York fashion, the brand’s signature winter coats are made from European aniline leathers and bespoke Italian hardware, with exaggerated faux-fur trims and velour linings to protect against the weather. Starting from a mere USD$275, what more could a chic city hound wish for?

HOME MADE CAT FOOD

3. CLEAN EATING

Ever since Elle McPherson’s trainer James Duigan started the whole ‘clean and lean’ craze, the ‘clean eating’ phenomenon has shown no signs of slowing down. In 2018 this trend will extend to the entire household, including our pets.

As pet lovers, we want our furkids to live a long and healthy life, full of energy and vitality, and diet plays a huge role in this. The media has done a lot to expose the reality of what goes into commercial pet foods over the past few years, including lots of cheap ‘fillers’ like grain and ash, which bulk food out but offer no nutritional value to the animal, In fact, these can actually cause reactions like itchy skin, diarrhoea and vomiting.

In response, there has been an explosion in natural, grain free, organic and raw pet foods, and what started as a niche market has now gone mainstream with a number of supermarkets even overhauling their pet food ranges to cater to more educated pet parents, making it easier than ever to feed your pet high quality, biologically appropriate food – WIN! We’re also counting on more of you choosing to make your own pet food this year – and we’ve got some great recipes to get you started.

pethaus denim battle jackets for dogs
4. ANTI-ESTABLISHMENT

Call it punk, rebel spirit, or just a big middle finger up to the big (orange) man, 2018 is all about tearing up the rule book and moving to your own beat. If your pets are anything like ours, they probably already operate by their own rules, so why not give them the right gear to do it in? Topping our list of offbeat pet brands is Australian maker of the coolest damn battle jackets for pets – Pethaus. And if you haven’t already seen seen these cult dog tags by Growlees, as worn of sassy insta-kween Dolly Pawton, then you’ve missed the memo. With slogans like ‘CUTE BUT PSYCHO. BUT CUTE’, and ‘I’M NO BASIC BITCH’, they are feisty AF.

5. BRING THE OUTSIDE IN

As we understand more about the natural behaviours of our modern feline friends, so too we become more aware of the need to provide the right kind of indoor environment for our cats. Cats are increasingly the popular choice for urbanites, meaning more felines are living a life exclusively indoors. We predict 2018 is the year more of you with indoor cats will bring the ‘outside in’. Whether it’s creating a lush indoor cat garden, ‘catifying’ your house with a cat friendly makeover including ramps, wall-mounted perches, hammocks and built-in scratchers, or trying out some great indoor games for cats which mimic the hunting instincts they would use outside.

stapleford park dog friendly hotel

6. THE LUXE DOG HOLIDAY

Taking your dog on holiday is not a new phenomenon, but 2018 will see dog friendly travel evolve to a new standard. According to new research by American Express, Britons will will spend £227 million taking their dogs on holiday this year, with over a quarter (27%) surveyed planning to take their pupster on vacation.

While there are plenty of hotels that claim to be ‘dog friendly’, many of these could better be described at ‘dog tolerant’. We predict this year will see more hotels upping their dog friendly cred, and offering full VIP (very important pet) packages, to make your faithful friend fully welcome.

Our pick of the litter is the new Doggy Divine package from Stapleford Park Hotel, a lavish Georgian country house hotel in Leicestershire. Setting a new standard in luxury dog friendly travel, Stapleford Park has commissioned bespoke luxury dog beds from local designers, Doggy & Gabbona of Melton Mowbray, each uniquely designed to complement the style and character of four select and luxuriously furnished suites at the 55-room country house hotel.  Each bed is individually handcrafted and contains hypo-allergenic materials to aide in peaceful sleep.

New doggy menus have also been devised providing a selection of gourmet recipes including a main meat dish, Pawpato treats and character creams. To ensure maximum comfort and indulgence, Stapleford Park has also introduced a new Doggy Afternoon tea menu, offering a delicious selection of doggy biscuits and Pawsecco (herbal drink for dogs from local business Hungry Hounds Bakery), to sit alongside its traditional and very popular afternoon tea for human guests.

To help you sort the good from the bad, we’ve launched our Luxe Pet Guide – the discerning pet lover’s little black book. Find the very best hotels, B&B’s and inns that genuinely LOVE DOGS!

So if you want to show your feline friend or canine companion how much you love them with a romantic dinner for two. We love London House by Gordon Ramsay; ideally located for a scenic dog walk in nearby Battersea Park you can then treat your four-legged friend to a treat and a drink in the bar before tucking in to one of their famous steaks.

5. HAVE A PLAY DATE

Whether you’re the proud pet parent of a canine companion or a feline friend, clear some time in your diary for an afternoon play date where you can focus your attention entirely on them. Contrary to popular belief, cats love playing fetch as much as dogs; and feather and string – a game where you attach a piece of string or a feather to a wand-like instrument, is another way to your cat’s heart. For playful pups, try tug of war or Frisbee if the weather permits, or alternatively opt for one of these indoor games.

Cat lovers have long been renowned for their stylish taste, and no doubt with the arrival of spring, you’ll be keen to try out the season’s array of new fashion trends. And of course, your fashion forward feline shouldn’t have to miss out either. So to lend a helping hand, we’ve rounded up 6 matching spring fashion trends that both you and your cat can get on board with.

  1. PRETTY PASTELS

Move over dark and moody… there’s a new colour palette in town! We’re fully ready to turn our backs on winter’s array of dark hues in favour of spring’s candy shop selection of pretty pastels. From lemon sherbet to blush pink, ultra violet and mint green, this season is all about dressing head-to-toe in sorbet shades. Kit your cat out in this trend thanks to a collar in your chosen pastel shade.

  1. CHECK MATE

The winter fashion scene was dominated by chess board checks and judging by spring’s runways, the trend isn’t going away anytime soon. Heritage checks get somewhat of a makeover, with the introduction of brighter colours to make them pop. Your cute kitty can get in on the action too with this perfect luxury soft cat bed.

  1. FUN FEATHERS

With feathers on the catwalk, the spring runways really were a cat’s dream! This season, everything is getting the feather treatment, with designers definitely not shying away from their use. Think feather laden coats, dresses and even footwear… oh my! Keep your cat entertained with feather accessories or risk your clothing capturing her attention.

  1. BOLD AND BRIGHT

If pretty pastels are too subdued for your taste, don’t panic! The spring runways were awash with pops of colour and can be easily incorporated into your wardrobe by pairing with neutrals. When it comes to your cat, brighten up her day thanks to the addition of a bow tie that slips safely onto her collar.
